On the last days of spring we decided to spend time on Silba, where together with numerous partners we decided to work on strengthening the communication and the connection with the local community. Our efforts and projects about marine habitats and organisms, on this small green pearl of the Adriatic, need the support of to local community so they could be as successful and sustainable in the long run. Partners from NGOs Terra Hub Croatia from Zagreb and By the Ocean We Unite from the Netherlands hold an interasting lecture inspired by personal experience from the members of the NGOs : Marko Capek (Terra Hub) and Thomas (BTOWU) how to reduce plastic, especially single-use. The waste management system is problem on most of the Adriatic islands, like Silba. Silba unfortunately struggles with large quantities of plastic not produced on the island, but brought by strong winds and waves. But all...

In Slovenia, town of Izola, during a period of several days (28.11 - 1.12.), a regional workshop on the exchange of experience and knowledge on marine litter was organized. It was organized as part of traditional annual workshops organized by MedPAN (Network of Managers of Protected Maritime Areas in the Mediterranean) and Interreg Project Act4Litter. The workshop was held under the title "MPAs facing pollution in the Mediterranean: thinking beyond borders", and the task was to present the most recent research and effort don on the problem of litter in the marine environment with a special emphasis on marine protected areas. Several problems and / or research in Croatia were also presented (marine litter and Neptune sea grass on Saharun beach on Dugi otok, and litter from leisure boats in NP Kornati).
As a part of the Clean Up the World Day that is happening around the world on the 15th of September, we held the underwater clean-up action on Puntamika beach in Zadar. Accompanied with good weather and a few hard working divers and citizens, we removed a noticeable amount of litter from the marine environment. We also collected larger parts of litter on the beach. The litter on the beach we did not manage to collect than was collected a few weeks later in a beach clean up action on which students from Marine Group of Biology Student Association - BIUS joined us. We also did a monitoring of that litter, separating waste by type and size and filling in the sheet forms.
