Through several dynamic weekend workshops (Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd) we wanted to experience the natural resources of Silba, together with the islanders, from a different perspective - so we organized workshops to provide all interested parties with tools and means to get acquainted with the recognizable insects and plants of this wooded green island, explore them, observe them and learn useful things that can contribute to their own development as well as the development of the island in a sustainable way. Through the workshops, we learned a lot ourselves and have already agreed on new activities for the spring - when we will be greeted on Silba by a completely different flora and fauna than this autumn. We learned more about the natural wealth of the island of Silba! We got to know Silba insects and what their role is! We learned why insects are important and we extended...
As part of a new project within the initiative "Together against marine litter", called "Fishing for ghost nets", we spent our late summer activities in the sub-region of the North Zadar archipelago. "Fishing for ghost nets" is a new project program within the initiative of the Society 20,000 Leagues "Together against marine litter" that has been lasting since 2016. The project implements specific activities and measures aimed at preserving and improving the status of marine habitats in the seabed north of the Zadar archipelago. The islands of Ist, Škarda, Premuda, Olib and Silba are constantly inhabited by a small number of people, but the sea around these islands hides some of the more famous fishing positions that are still attractive today. Attractive fishing positions entail a greater possibility and frequency of loss of fishing gear. Discarded and / or lost fishing gear continues to "hunt" and is a major problem...
As part of a new project within the initiative "Together against marine litter", entitled "Clean ports, clean sea!" we spent our summer activities for the last time in 2020 on an island we haven't been to yet - IST! On Wednesday, August 19, early in the morning we visited Ist for the first time and moving from one side of the island to the other, where we had an appointment with members of the Ist Youth Association, we realized that Ist is completely different from Silba and Olib - over the weekend we realized how different it actually is. A walk and getting to know the island, preparatory talks about the logistics of cleaning and setting up the exhibition were resolved in a pleasant atmosphere and we returned to our summer base on Silba waiting and preparing for the last in a series of activities from the summer tour of...
As part of a new project within the initiative "Together against marine litter", entitled "Clean ports, clean sea!" we spent our activities on another beautiful island of the Zadar archipelago – Olib. On Friday, August 14, we boarded all the necessary things and equipment on the diving boat early and headed towards Olib. We were greeted by the President of the Local Board of Olib who provided us with great logistical support during all activities. We immediately set to work to do the underwater cleaning action of the local harbor. The harbor underwater has been cleaned sporadically by enthusiastic individuals over the past few years, but there has been no organized, thorough action - therefore, we did not know exactly what to expect at the bottom. We had good support from the mainland, a few divers in the sea, a few snorkels and a hard-working team that collected a considerable...
As part of a new project within the initiative "Together against marine litter", entitled "Clean ports, clean sea!" we spent our activities again on a beautiful green island. On Saturday, August 8, we headed to Mul early to do an underwater cleaning action. We had good support from the mainland, a few divers in the sea, a few snorkels and a hard-working team that collected a considerable amount of small light plastic floating on the surface with nets. The action of cleaning the seabed of the port of Mul on Silba brought us too many ugly shots – sea urchins with plastic on them, floating pieces of bags on the surface, tires discarded on the seabed, and much more that we tried to clean as much as possible. However, there was also some marine litter related to fishing and mariculture - one of them a net - and a surprise...
